WHAT’S OUR STORY?

Our Philadelphia-based company designs and manufactures sustainable products that enable the creation of unique outdoor environments. We are focused on local manufacturing, where all of our products are sourced and made in the USA. The company core is within its design studio where industrial designers, architects, landscape designers and fabricators create products based on mass- customization, material engineering and flat pack shipping. Through a blend of precision technologies and traditional fabrication, these products facilitate a way of living that brings sustainable practices into daily life.

SHIFT_DESIGN has placed a significant emphasis upon its company’s environmental strategy through the power of design, thus reinforcing local manufacturing and waste reduction methods by choosing product components that are made from recycled content and are 100% recyclable after a long life cycle. The product systems are created with an emphasis on ease of install that on the residential scale allows for Do-It-Yourself projects. On a commercial scale this strongly promotes the creation of a newly skilled “green” labor force for multiple product applications. Our fabrication model is based upon nodal manufacturing within a range of 120 transport miles which directly affects the products carbon footprint. We will further partner with manufacturers across the country to fabricate our products within our node city locations.

We currently conduct work at a variety of scales and across different media to address numerous design challenges that respond to different conditions in the built environment. You’ll find that the content of our products and projects express our interest in creating a multi-layered dialogue with built forms that the public can interpret in a variety of ways. We meld architectural space, public art, plant life and product design in the urban landscape, most projects have a sustainable premise from which we start. Often times these ecological starting points are secondary in reading but primary in function. Having done work at various scales with a direct interaction with the public, codes and technical limitations; we imagine that each project can be interactive and can change or amplify its meaning by proximity of vantage point and change in scale.

We believe our experiences as a collaborative design firm have prepared us well to pursue our inquiry into public interventions. The range of various projects at different scales gives us the experience to take on design problems and still allows us to have fun, be creative, innovative and serve our clients professionally.
