Environmental + Experience Design

SHIFTSPACE is a collective of architects and designers focused on creating physical environments that amplify brand stories and impart memorable interactions. The studio’s prowess in designing at scales large and small provide the tools to consider every detail and ensure that they define the whole brand. As a result, brands are able to extend into spatial experiences in natural, yet unexpected ways. The studio finds its strength in collaboration at all levels. As a multi-disciplinary creative team, the studio can plug into a brand’s brief to help create and deliver an agency’s vision, interface with an in-house team, or provide consultation.

The studio has been blending architectural space, public art, landscapes, and sustainability together with places and products since 2009.

Services: Architectural Branding, Identity Development, Placemaking, Activation, Environmental Design, Industrial Design, Experience Concepts

Our team

Founded by CEO Mario Gentile, SHIFTSPACE is re-imagining environments and tactile experiences through the creative direction of our multi-disciplinary design team. The creative team is led by Creative Director Tim Barnes who focuses on design that: promotes civic engagement; provides a positive ecological impact; and is honest in form, function, and material. Leveraging our experiences in architecture, landscape design, product design and fabrication the studio creates environments through the lens of sustainability.

Mario Gentile

founder / ceo

As founder and CEO of Philadelphia-based SHIFTSPACE Design, Mario guides the strategic direction of the studio’s work for the design of environments, experiences and lifestyle products (under the SHIFT brand). The work and research have a modern aesthetic with a focus on mass-customization, prefabrication, and sustainable design. He is a Registered Architect in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the state of New York, and is accredited by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). An honors graduate from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and he has received his Masters degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University.

Before founding SHIFTSPACE, he worked with KieranTimberlake, Peter Marino Associates and JXN Studio in Philadelphia and for George Ranalli Architect and Resolution 4: Architecture in New York. Mario has been involved with award winning and published residential, commercial and institutional building projects in both national and international locations.

Mario has served as an Adjunct Professor at University of Pennsylvania and Temple University with studio work focused on urban interventions, product design and craft. He has served as guest juror and lecturer at design schools throughout the country. He has served on the Facilities and Horticultural Committees for Philadelphia’s Historic Bartram’s Garden and currently sits on its Board of Directors.

Tim Barnes

creative director

Tim Barnes has worked at SHIFTSPACE since 2010. Tim oversees both the creative direction and technical design of the studio’s work. While at SHIFTSPACE he has: overseen the design of major placemaking and urban improvement projects at 30th Street Station, Urban Outfitters HQ, the National Parks Service; designed, coordinated fabrication, and provided visual direction for the SHIFT brand; and provided architectural design for various private residences. Selected works include: a mass-produced modular parklet system; a fold-up green roof tile product; a temporary structure for GrowNYC / TDBank in Union Square, NYC; a national standard planter for Shake Shack; and concepts for Ligne Roset. Tim was also an integral participant in Bloomberg Philanthropies FastFWD Accelerator. Tim holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art.

Prior to working at SHIFTSPACE, Tim worked at various Philadelphia-based architecture firms, honing his technical, spatial, and representational skills. Tim’s architectural background informs his work at SHIFTSPACE, providing the technical foundation to work at scales large and small.

Tim has a passion for using design to re-imagine stagnant urban elements. Tim’s proficiency across the mediums of architecture, industrial design, and the visual arts allows him bring immediate and lasting solutions to the urban environment.
